WINTER 2011 WORKSHOPS

Being the Bookbinding Associate at the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center www.pyramidatlanticartcenter.o is awesome, and I have some new workshops to offer! Check out the Pyramid Atlantic Website www.pyramidatlanticartcenter.o or contact me at bookmakerpa@gmail.com for more details.

Introduction to Bookbinding
Two Tuesdays January 11th and 18th, 6:00-9:00PM
Instructor: Patricia Lee
Tuition: $120 *(plus $10 materials fee payable to instructor)
Enrollment: 4-8
Description: Have you ever wanted to learn how to make your own
journals, notebooks, photo albums, or scrapbooks but don't know where
to start? In this one-day workshop, students will gain a basic
understanding of the materials and equipment commonly used in
bookbinding. Students will learn three different book structures,
including pamphlet, accordian, and japanese stab binding. We will also
discuss how we can take our newly learned bookbinding skills and
change the size and shape of a book to suit our personal design needs
and style.

Intermediate Bookbinding Workshop Series
Two Tuesdays February 21st and 28th 6:00-10:00PM
Instructor: Patricia Lee
Tuition: $150 *(plus $20 materials fee payable to instructor)
Enrollment: 4-8
Description: Do you have some experience with bookbinding, but want to
take it to the next level? In this series of two evening workshops we
will experience the delights of three exposed sewing structures,
including longstitch, two-needle coptic stitch, and sewing over tapes.
Each student will use decorative paper and a rainbow of colored waxed
linen thread to create their own collection of uniquely designed
books. This brand new format will give you the chance to explore how
different materials and book designs can showcase your art or writing.
Students should have a strong understanding of basic bookbinding
skills for this class. A detailed supply list will be provided upon
enrollment.

Secret Belgian Binding
Tuesday March 8th, 6:00-10:00PM
Instructor: Patricia Lee
Tuition: $80 *(plus $10 materials fee payable to instructor)
Enrollment: 4-8
Do you want to know the secret to this unique binding? Rumored to be
developed in Belgium in between the 14th and 16th centuries, the
secret to this very unique binding style was lost until it was
recently resurrected by Hedi Kyle. Don't miss out on this opportunity
for a new way for making a flexible hardcover book! It is perfect for
any books you want to make that need to lay flat, like journals or
sketch books, for example. Students should have a strong
understanding of basic bookbinding skills for this class (covering
boards, punching covers and text, etc.). A detailed supply list will
be provided upon enrollment.

Starbook
Tuesday March 22nd, 6:00-10:00PM
Instructor: Patricia Lee
Tuition: $80 *(plus $10 materials fee payable to instructor)
Enrollment: 4-8
Do you want a new and interesting way to display photos, mementos, and
collectible paper ephemera? The starbook looks like a regular album
when closed, but when opened and tied together, it blossoms into a
multi-layered star with pockets. Kits will be provided with all that
you need to make your book, though you can bring your own decorative
paper choices and incorporate them into your design. Students should
have a strong understanding of basic bookbinding skills for this class
(covering boards, punching covers and text, etc.). A detailed supply
list will be provided upon enrollment.

New Books! New website design! Check it out! :)

Your favorite BookWyrm is being featured on the Wierd Tales Magazine website www.weirdtales.net for a custom-order Zombie Book that I made with the help of the truly awesome Creative and Editorial Director of Weird Tales Magazine, Stephen Segal, and the amazing wood-working stylings of furniture-maker Art Drauglis www.adrauglis.com. See my portfolio for more pictures.

Artist Statement:
Crafty all my life, I settled on bookbinding because I love to read, own, stack, share, nap with, talk about, organize, and carry around books. They are my constant companions. I have studied the Book Arts with teachers that I deeply respect from the Corcoran School of Art, Pyramid Atlantic, and the Art and Soul Retreat. Classes and my own personal research in bookbinding have given me the tools to take what was in my head and coax it out of paper, wood, metal, and glass - whatever I could find. I believe that book becomes art when its creation has intention. This can be in the form of content (text or images), or in my case, in its structure and design. I have concentrated on book structure as my main form of expression, though Book Art with my own original content is in the works.
The best way to describe my collection of interests is to call it a Wunderkammen or a Curiosity Cabinet. Recently, I have investigated the habits of the elusive BookWyrm, dabbled in Robot psychology, and discovered woodworking. Past and future Wunderkammen inhabitants include: Dragons, robots, etymology, impetus, farmers markets, impromptu curiosity trips, archaeology, the Seed Savers movement, improbable inventions, old patents, blueprints, imaginary maps, transcontinental train rides, the connection of the senses to art and life, what we eat, the influence of food on history, ancient recipes/methods to prepare foods, legacies, the conservation/preservation of books, librarians, wandering traveler libraries, bookmobiles, book printing practices, ink fate, colophons, book structure history (the effect of industrialism, availability of materials, war, technology), hidden intricacies, and deciphering codes. Undoubtedly, many more will demand entrance into the ever-evolving Wunderkammen, and I will not disappoint, for I know I can always revisit the delightful nooks and cubbyholes to rummage and linger.
